Thank you for taking the time to learn more about what jury service means.  We hope to inform you on what to expect and what is expected of you when you are summoned to appear as a juror in Cheboygan County. 

 

Public Act 12 of 2004:   effective June 1, 2004

How are juror's selected?
  • Once a year the Secretary of State will compile a list of citizens who may be eligible to serve on a jury from a list that identifies citizens who possess a Michigan driver's license or State of Michigan identification card.              

  • Identified citizens are mailed a Juror Qualification Questionnaire.  After the questionnaire is completed, returned, and evaluated, a citizen may be called to serve on a jury.

What should I do when I receive a summons to appear for jury duty?
  • You should expect to be in court for one half day (approximately 8:30am-12:00pm).  

  • Call the court at 231-627-8840 after 4:00p.m. THE DAY BEFORE you are summoned to appear to check to see if you are still needed for jury service.

  • If you are selected to sit as a juror on a case, you will be notified of another date to return for trial.  It is possible that not all juror's summoned will be selected to sit as juror's for a trial.  

  • ATTIRE -  Proper attire is required.  No shorts, hats, halter tops, tank tops, or bare feet are permitted.  

STATUTORY EXEMPTIONS Below is a list of statutory exemptions for jury service.  If you qualify for an exemption, you MUST notify the court in WRITING of the reason for presumed exemption.  Unless the court excuses you from service, you MUST appear for jury service on the date you are summoned to appear.   Letters may be sent by mail to PO BOX 70 or faxed to 231-627-8444.

  1. To qualify as a juror, a person shall:
    -  be a resident of Cheboygan County
    -  be able to speak/understand the English language
    -  be physically/mentally able to carry out the functions of a juror.  Temporary  inability will not be deemed a disqualification.  If you have a permanent medical problem/disability, a note from a physician must be sent to the court along with the written request
    -  not have served as a juror during the proceeding 12 months
    -  not be currently serving a  sentence on a felony conviction

  • A person over 70 years of age may claim an exemption from jury service and will be excused upon making a written request to the court.  ( A person may serve if they wish to do so)

Emergencies/Illness If an emergency/illness prevents attendance, the court MUST be notified ASAP at 231-627-8840.

POSTPONEMENTS If you wish your jury service to be postponed, send a letter to the court explaining your reason for your request for postponement and provide the court with an alternate month you might be available.   

Juror Compensation

You will be compensated for jury service as follows:

  • .26 cents per mile round-trip

  • First full day of service    $25.00  

  • First half day of service  $12.50

  • Subsequent full day       $40.00

  • Subsequent half day     $20.00

Juror Parking
  • There is ample free parking in the parking lots located around the county building.  The most direct entrance to the court is the front Main Street entrance.
